The 2018 'Prairie Light' calendar features my photographs from extensive travels throughout the Canadian Prairies. In 2012, I also published a book called 'Mike Grandmaison's Prairie and Beyond' (Turnstone Press). The calendar was 1 of 8 published by Wyman Publishing featuring my photography exclusively. Thank you kindly in advance for supporting my work! Enjoy!

The prairie crocus, our symbol of spring on the Canadian prairies, is one of those wildflowers that I can never get enough of! I photographed these early blooms in Sandliands Provincial Forest on a cold morning using a 200mm macro lens. I made 7 different images focused at slightly different areas on the flower to gain a little extra sharpness on the closest bloom.Shooting at a wide aperture allowed the background to remain blurred and soft. I later processed the images in Adobe Camera Raw and then brought them into Helicion Focus, software that combines any number of differently focused images into one final image. The green color in the background is the result of fruiticose lichens growing amongst the crocuses at the edge of this particular jackpine forest.

'Prairie Sky' - Manitoba Series (Notecard and Photographic Print)

As magnificent as the Canadian Rockies are, so are the grand and inspiring skies of the Canadian Prairies. From the subtle skies of a seemingly featureless cloudy day to the puffy cumulus clouds of a summer afternoon to the more dramatic skies of a spectacular sunrise or sunset, they are like ever-changing colors on a living canvas.

The breeze too is part of the prairie experience, as are the sounds and the scents. The view is unobstructed because, on the prairie, one can see forever and ever and ever … almost to the next grain elevator a dozen kilometers or so away. This is truly the Land of the Living Skies.
