    The old gas pumps in Baljennie, Saskatchewan were photographed circa 1981. Baljennie is the town my wife's paternal family settled in when John Rayner immigrated from England in 1903 and founded 'Bolton Farm'. The farm remains in the Rayner family today.

    Discovering old homesteads can be a lot of fun. I often seek permission before stepping onto private property and I won't trespass if a sign indicates such. In this particular case, I was visiting a relative near Baljennie, SK. Through my 'private tour' I also learned a lot about the family.

    What went on behind these walls? To enhance the sense of mystery, I photographed the old general store at dusk, waiting for a darkish blue color to predominate in the sky. I lit the building and the foreground with a large mag light during a 30 second exposure. The stars suggest yet another level of mystery.
