In the latest issue of Outdoor Photography Canada magazine, I look at one of Canada's rarest ecosystem, the 'tall grass prairie'. Situated barely an hour south of Winnipeg near Tolstoi, Manitoba, it's a place that I have visited on numerous occasions. Check out the story and photographs in the Winter 2014 issue of Outdoor Photography Canada magazine, Canada's finest outdoor magazine!

I celebrated the winter solstice in Winnipeg by photographing the window frost on my bedroom window. With a windchill of -37 degrees Celsius yesterday, it felt quite cozy inside compared to the frigid temperatures outside. Although our windows are quite efficient, a small amount of frost still forms on the bottom of the glass pane as the curtains are almost always closed. I composed the image by moving around so that I could use the warm, orange light of the sunrise reflecting of my neighbour's house as an effective background to create a color contrast with the cool blue frost pattern in the shade. The winter solstice marks the day with the shortest daylight hours and the longest night ... so it's all uphill for us now!

My good friend and 'designer extraordinaire', Robert L. Peters, was recently recognized for his lifetime contribution to the design profession. Rob was presented with the elite award during a 50th anniversary reception for Icograda on November 17 in Montreal during 'Montréal International and Mission Design'. Icograda is the world body for professional communication design.

Rob co-founded Circle Design in 1976 and since then, he has tirelessly created and designed phenomenal work. I am proud to have had Rob and his team design all of my own identity and communication materials starting even before I launched my photography business in 1996. His elegant designs have surely contributed to my own success.

I invite you to browse the CIRCLE website to witness some of his amazing accomplishments to date, including many stunning postage stamps!

The award could not have been given to a more deserving individual. Bravo Rob!

I am officially sold out of my 'CANADA' book! I now have just a handful of books left for my library. The bestselling book was published by Key Porter Books in 2005 and a total of 25,000 copies were printed over 3 editions. When Key Porter Books went into receivership in 2011 after H.B. Fenn collapsed, I purchased the remaining 2,140 books. I sold the last 100 copies this week. I suspect that a few copies could be found in select book stores across the country.

The good news is that Les Editions des Plaines of Winnipeg, MB is currently in the process of translating my 'CANADA' book into the French language! While I have re-scanned the images and made significant changes in the layout to reflect my own vision, the book is essentially the same although it will sport a brand new cover. Les Editions des Plaines will simultaneously be releasing English and French hard cover editions. This opens up new markets previously unexplored in French Canada, the USA and Europe, as well as in other French speaking countries. I am very excited about this first book project with Les Editions des Plaines and more projects are in the works! Soon enough, I will be traveling to a favorite place - Friesens in Altona, MB - for yet another round of prepress work and press checks.

    Further details to come soon!
