Access Copyright for Creators
Mike Grandmaison, April 12, 2014 at 6:06 PM

If you are a visual artist, writer, editor or translator, you could be eligible to register for Access Copyright. Access Copyright is a program that compensates Creators for the use of their works in schools, businesses and other organizations. Access Copyright manages licensing, collection of licensing fees and distribution of royalties on behalf of Creators.

Visual artists that qualify for the program include photographers, cartoonists, sculptors, fine artists/painters, multimedia artists, illustrators, craftsperson, architects and clothing designers. To be eligible for the Payback Program you must register by the end of December. Payment follows in the following year. Each year, Creators must make a Claim of their works published in print which must be completed between April 1 and May 31, 2014. This involves a fair bit of work if you have been in the business for a while and if this is your first time submitting. Once in the system, Creators only need to update their Claims. Visit the Access Copyright website for more detailed information.

As a photographer, all of my photographs and writings that are published in books, magazines, newspapers and journals are eligible. However, works published in calendars, advertisements, reports, online, etc are not eligible. This is also retroactive to the last 20 years. All I need to do is to keep up-to-date with my new publications during the year and fill out my Claim before May 31.

Don't procrastinate, register online today.

All creators affiliated with Access Copyright as of December 31, 2013 will be eligible to submit a claim for this year's payment. Payments are distributed at the end of every - See more at: http://www.accesscopyright.ca/creators/payback-for-writers-and-payback-for-visual-artists/#sthash.RpdBmuJO.dpuf
