Mohawk College Student Gives Back to Her Community

I love to hear ‘uplifting stories’ since our daily news are so full of ‘negative ones’. This is one of them.

A few months ago, I was approached by Chawana Champagne, a second year student at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. She was producing a powerpoint presentation for ‘new Canadian citizens’ to watch while waiting to be sworn into the Canadian family. She requested my assistance and hoped that I would provide some images to include in her powerpoint presentation. "Mohawk College hosts this event each year”, she said, “and as we have many International students, it’s our way to give back to the community". Being a passionate Canadian myself, I accepted her challenge with great pleasure.

Lucy Lobodici of the Campus Student Employment Program, further adds:  “One of the large community events we host at Mohawk College is the Canadian Citizenship Ceremony in collaboration with the Institute of Canadian Citizenship (ICC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). We host this event twice a year, in March and October”.  The next ceremony takes place this Wednesday, October 17, 2012.

It's so wonderful to see such acts of kindness start at such an early age! Chawana Champagne, along with her supervisor Lucy Lobodici of Mohawk College, should feel very proud of their accomplishments. I am!

To all ‘New Canadian Citizens’, welcome to Canada!
