The "X" Shape

The last rays of the sun shone brightly on the cattail stems at the edge of the Seine River in Winnipeg. The warm, yellow color of the vegetation contrasts sharply with the cool, blue color of the snow.

The yellow oblique stem creates a strong color contrast with the parallel but softer oblique lines of the blue shadows but, at the same time, creates an echo statement with those same blue lines.

The oblique stem (line) in the middle also contrasts with the vertical, middle stem (line). The point of intersection of the oblique line with the middle vertical line creates a strong "X" shape that holds the eye.
